C : |
Ahaa, T! |
Yeah, T! |
2 |
T : |
Yiee! |
Yes? |
3 |
C : |
Makye eh! |
Good morning! |
4 |
T : |
Y'èsōn. Na wo ho te sèn? |
Fine, and how are you? |
5 |
C : |
Aah, bōkōō. Na woè? |
Well, fine, and you? |
6 |
T : |
Menso me ho yè. Na anōpa yi? |
I'm also fine. What's new this morning? |
7 |
C : |
Anōpa yi deè berèw. Bōne biara ni hō. Sè deɛ ènora ye si hyehyè noara; sèè yèse yèbèhyia ha na yayō…yabèyèè…yabèkasa ama papa yi noara. Nti ebōō nondu no na me to faa wo hō. Nti me faa hō koraa afei na na wo "room-mate" ɔda èmpa mu. Aaah wasōre nso ōnsoree... |
Nothing bad this morning. It's just about the arrangement we made yesterday for the (Twi) conversation for the man. So I was at your place around ten o'clock. Your room-mate was in bed at that time, sort of half-asleep. |
8 |
T : |
Ōtumi da oohǃ Ha haǃ Ōtumi da anōpa nna biaǃ |
He can sleep! Ha ha. He sleeps well through mornings. |
9 |
C : |
Mmmǃ Na ōkyerè sèè awō bi de no kakra ama w'ahyè ayii..atadeè bi aa mekyerè sè afa ne kōn ho nyinaa ne nensa ho. Nti èyè yè no na me bisaa no sèè wo wō hen, èna ōsee wo ni hō. Naa, nti metwène kakra, me twène bèyèsèè sima du bi. Nti èyèyè noara na megyaa nkra sèè mereba ha nti sè wobaa ōnka kyerè wo sèè meretwène wo wō animu ha na ya yō ayi no. |
Mmm! He said he was feeling a little bit cold so he was even in warm clothing. So I asked him of your whereabouts, and he told me that you weren't around. I, therefore, waited a while, about ten minutes wait. I then left a note with him that I'll be waiting for you in front of here (Rolfe Hall). |
10 |
T : |
Oh, ampaǃ Ōka kyerèè me. Mebaae no na afei ōkakyerèè me sèè wo bè faa hō anōpa yi sè deè woreka yi ara. Me sōree anōpa no na mesee merekō akō tene tene me mu kakra nti mefaa dan no akyiri hō èkō nante sukuu mu hō kakra, naa, me dane makyiri baa yè no na èkyerè sèè "time" no aa yèhyehyèè no koraa apa ho. Naa, efie te sèn? |
That's true. He told me when I came that you came to my place just as you are saying. I decided to go for a little walk (exercise) on campus when I woke up. I was already late for the appointment by the time I came back (from the walk). So how is home? |
11 |
C : |
Aah, efie deè bokōō. |
Well, everything is fine at home. |
12 |
T : |
Saah? |
Oh, so? |
13 |
C : |
Aane. |
Yes. |
14 |
T : |
Ebusuafoō ho nyinaa ho yè? |
How is the family? |
15 |
C : |
Ooh, wōmo nyinaa te ènkwa mu; te apō kama. |
They are all alive and kicking. |
16 |
T : |
Mmm? Na wobè duruu aha "time" bèn? |
When did you arrive here? |
17 |
C : |
Mebè duruu aha nansa neènè. |
I arrived here three days ago. |
18 |
T : |
Nansa neènè? |
Three days ago? |
19 |
C : |
Aane. Naa mefaa London. Ōhō nso me…. me daa hō anadwo pè. Adeèkyee yè no na me buu me kete mu, na tipaaǃ |
Yes, and I stopped over in London. I spent a night there. I packed bag and baggage and left there the following morning. |
20 |
T : |
Mante wonka biara; enoara ne sèè…. Quarcoopome ka kyerèè me sèè…woreba, nti naa ayè me nfumuuso paa. Èna mesee me nua yi ebia na nensa anka me "number" nti na èbaa no saa. |
I did not here much of your coming; just that Quarcopome told me that you were coming, so I was caught virtually unprepared. So I was wondering that you might not have had my address, and that might have been why things turned out that way. |
21 |
C : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
22 |
T : |
Na wobaa yè no, aha sei nso te sèn? |
How do you find here? |
23 |
C : |
Aaahǃ Aha deè, èneè woara wo hwèe aa èneè mebè duruu na woara aburokyire nkania asō agu mani so. |
Well, as you would expect, I was a little fascinated by the sparkling lights on my arrival. |
24 |
T : |
Eehǃ Ha haǃ |
Ha ha! |
25 |
C : |
Ohǃ Ènyè asèm ketewa ohǃ |
Oh! No joke. |
26 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
27 |
C : |
Meka wo nanǃ Me duruu ha paa na mani so krakrakrakraǃ |
I bet you! I was simply fascinated. |
28 |
T : |
Woto w'ani aa…. |
Turning you eyes… |
29 |
C : |
Metwa m'ani fa ha na mètwa afa ha, bèbiara aborōfo atwa meho ahyia. |
I looked left and right, and whites everywhere. |
30 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
31 |
C : |
Naa, me nfa èhene ni? Èneè, na agya me so me wō yèfrè no sèn,…. Quarcoopome "number." |
Where should I pass? Well, I had Quarcoopome's number. |
32 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
33 |
C : |
Èneè nti me kō hyèè,…, me kaa sè mèfrè no. |
So I entered the telephone booth to call him. |
34 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
35 |
C : |
Nti mekòò,…kòò afidie no ho koraa na sè deè yènsi miemia so koraa ho ayè dene ama me. Yèn dowhaa no efidie no nnyè wei bia. |
At first I found it a little bit difficult using the machine. The telephones back home are a little bit different. |
36 |
T : |
Aane, èyè nokware. |
Yes, that's right. |
37 |
C : |
Dowhaa koraa deè afidie aa yède sika to mu deè yènhunuu bi da….afidie deè èyè dèn na woamene sika. Nti me kō hyèè afidie no ho na…na me tiri nkwa…krataa bi bō afidie no ho aa akyerè sè deè yen si…yō ho adwuma fa. |
Back home there aren't paid telephones. (T laughs) How can a telephone swallow money? (T laughs) Fortunately, there were instructions pasted on the machine (telephone). |
38 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
39 |
C : |
Nti èyèyè no na mesee Ohǃ nti sè deè y'atwerè no no, medii so pèpèèpè. Nti mekenkan wie yè noara na metum; frèè Quarcoopome. |
I therefore decided to follow the instructions to the letter, and, thus, was able to call Quarcoopome. |
40 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
41 |
C : |
Aane. Nti mefrèè no na meka kyerè no sèè, Ohǃ èneè mabedu. |
Yes, so I told him that I had arrived. |
42 |
T : |
Ohǃ |
Oh! |
43 |
C : |
Ōno nso na mabō no amaneè sèè mereba dadaada. |
I had previously informed him of my coming. |
44 |
T : |
Ohǃ |
Oh! |
45 |
C : |
Nti na ma ma no atenka sèè mereba. Nti…ōno mom koraa deè "time" aa mebè duruu yè no na onim sèè,…na ōngye ndi sè mèba abè duru ntèm saa. |
He didn't expect me to arrive that early anyway. |
46 |
T : |
Ohǃ |
Oh! |
47 |
C : |
Nti na ōnboa ne ho sè ōbèba abèhyia me saa mmerè no. |
So he was not at the airport to meet me, at that time. |
48 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
49 |
C : |
Ntii,…meduruu yè no aa mèfrèè no no èna ōsee saa deè aa ōrefrè ne yōnko bi aa yèfrè no Joe. |
He therefore told me, when I called him, that he was going to call a friend called Joe, |
50 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
51 |
C : |
Naa, ōno na ōwō "car"; |
Because he had a car |
52 |
T : |
Aha! |
Aha! |
53 |
C : |
Na èkyerè sèè ōne no… |
so that they come and… |
54 |
T : |
Abèfa wo |
Pick you up. |
55 |
C : |
Abèfa me. Nti metwène saa bèyè…, metwène kyèree kakra,…èkyèree nso ankyè biara aa èyè hu biara, efiri sèè saa mmèrè no aa mete hō no na ènoōma pii twetwa twetwa mu aa èkyerè sèè,...merehwè, no nyinaa ayè ade fofrō bi saa no; ahaǃ na èkyerè sèè no nyinaa èregye mmerè. Nti èkyèree nso ankyè m'aniso; èna ōbèfaa mee aa èkyerè sèè me baa yie yi. |
Right! Pick me up. So I waited for a while. The wait did not appear to be too long since there were several interesting things happening. |
56 |
T : |
Nti woreba no,… wosii wō "New York"? |
Did you stop over in New York? |
57 |
C : |
Aane, mesii hō. |
Yes, I got there. |
58 |
T : |
Aha; Na ōhō nso te sèn? |
And how is that place? |
59 |
C : |
Eihǃ New York? Hmmǃ Eihǃ |
Wowǃ New York? Well…. |
60 |
T : |
Amanfoō ani so krakrakrakra. |
I guess you were amazed. |
61 |
C : |
Gyae, gyae, gyae, gyae, ènyè asèm papa. Kuro no mu adan atenten atenten. Mesee, adan bobō, bobō, bobō hoǃ Èna mesee Eihǃ Mehwè saa na mesee Eihǃ Adan bi wō hō aa sè wohwè duru èsoro dowhaa wosee na wei deè "painter" bèn koraa na ōforo duru hō kōyèè saa adwuma yi? |
Hold it'. It was no joke'. The buildings were so tall and compact that I kept wondering who did the painting (of the walls) |
62 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Aha! |
63 |
C : |
Èneè ōwō akokoeduro ohǃ Eihǃ Sè woahunu, èkyerè sèè wohwè, hwè hwè aa na wei deè m'adanfo bi bè ka "wo hwè, hwè, aa na asan abè hwè wo." |
Whoever that was must have been very brave. It's even hard to describe. |
64 |
T : |
Asan abè hwè woǃ Na wode ōhō toto aha sei ho aa na sèn na esi teè? |
How do you compare New York with here? |
65 |
C : |
Ōhō no,…sè èfa ōhō adan no deè…. |
Talking about buildings… |
66 |
T : |
Ōhō adan no. |

67 |
C : |
Ōhō adan no, èbōbō ho, sè woahunu, èna èwoware so. Ten ten tenǃ Na aha adan no ayè… |
The buildings there are taller and more compact. |
68 |
T : |
Ntientia. |
|
69 |
C : |
Èbèn yèn dowhaa deè no kakra,…sè efie adan sè woahunu sèè efie adan no,…aha no, apete. (T: Aha!) Ahaaǃ New York mmom no akeka abom na èsan so yè atenten atenten. Ahaǃ Èna ōhō no nso no, bi biara yè kikraw kikraw,…. |
However, the buildings here are less tall and more spread out, something in a way closer to what we have at home. In New York, everything is brisk and very fast. |
70 |
T : |
Kikrawǃ |
|
71 |
C : |
Na, saa na akōyè ohǃ Mmmǃ Na ōhō nnye…"well"…. |
That is the way it is. |
72 |
T : |
Na, èyi nso soèè,…èwia no, New York èwia no ne aha sei nso èwia no, ètesèn? |
How do you compare the weather in New York with that here? |
73 |
C : |
Eihǃ Mebèduruu yè no na mesee, hmm, menso mepè me ho asèm ohǃ Merefiri,…sè mereba no agya makō hyè "coat" bi kuntan, agya merekō aburokyire, mahyè "coat"; na meduruu New York, soaaǃ Yesi firi "plane" no mu noaa me na merete nfifire yi. When I arrived…., well,…. I tell you, sometimes I find trouble for myself. I wore a coat on the day I left Ghana; I knew I was going abroad; and when I got to New York, damn it! I was sweating like hell. It was terrible warm there. I think they announced that New York was very warm, even before we got out of the plane. I actually ignored the announcement because I thought since people here are used to cold weather, what to them was warm was nothing to scare a person like me. |
74 |
T : |
Èyè hyeǃ Sè yèn hō noǃ |
Yeah! Considering the way it is back home. |
75 |
C : |
Tesè efie sè deè ōhō yèhye fa no. Hmmǃ Nti wōmo kaa sè ōhō yèhye no na me nim sè ènyè adeè aa èyè hu biara. Afei meyii me ti, na mese Eihǃ Nkorōfo yi kaa yèǃ |
Yes, the way it is very warm at home. In fact, I was not bothered by the announcement. But when I got out of the airplane, I agreed with them. |
76 |
T : |
Na wode toto Los Angeles ha yi so aa na ète sèn? |
How do you compare (the weather) that with here in Los Angeles? |
77 |
C : |
Ne hyeè no? |
You mean the temperature? |
78 |
T : |
Aane. |
Yes. |
79 |
C : |
Merefiri ōhō no deè na ōhō yè hye kyène aha. |
It was warmer there at the time of my leaving. |
80 |
T : |
Saa? |
Is that? |
81 |
C : |
Aaneǃ |
Yes. |
82 |
T : |
Eihǃ Me deè mansi ōhō ohǃ Nti èyaa na mmerè biara medwene sèè aha sei yèhye sen nowhaa. |
Oh, really? I didn't stop over there so I always thought it's always warmer here. |
83 |
C : |
Eihǃ merefiri ōhō no deè, na ōhō yè hye. |
Well, at the time of my leaving there it was really warm there. |
84 |
T : |
Ahaǃ |
Really? |
85 |
C : |
Wonam koraa wote nka. Ènyumerè koraa no koraa,…aha no èbō nōn num paemu erekō nōn nsiah hō saa no aa na nframa no mu ahyè aseè ereyè nyuunyununyu. Aha, saa na aha no akō yè. But, ōhō koraa mekae sè èbōō bèyè sè nōn nsiah bi koraa na.... |
You coud really feel it (the heat) as you walked around. Even in the evenings,…over here it starts getting cold in the evenings between 5:30pm to 6pm. That's the way it is here. |
86 |
T : |
Woadwa wo bo so. |
|
87 |
C : |
Mmm, m'adwa me bo so. Menyaa koraa nka medwaa me bo so de nenam kuro mu. |
But over there I remember once that even at six o'clock I felt like walking out bare-chested. |
88 |
T : |
Ohǃ Naa sukuu so nso te sèn? |
So how is school? |
89 |
C : |
Sukuu deè…. |
As for school…. |
90 |
T : |
Worekō sukuu bèn? |
Which school are you attending? |
91 |
C : |
Mereba UCLA. |
I'm coming to UCLA. |
92 |
T : |
Saa woahunu? |
Oh, really? |
93 |
C : |
Aane. |
Yes. |
94 |
T : |
Naa, wo nkrataa nyinaa ayè yie? |
Have you gone through the necessary documentation? |
95 |
C : |
Ohǃ Bi biara da so kama. Nti mekōō…makō hō ama wōmo see yèfrè biribi "Registration" ène "Enrolment". Nti nansa ne ènè koraa na meyèè no nyinaa wie yè. |
Oh! Everything is O.K. I even went through Registration and enrolment about three days ago. |
96 |
T : |
Ohǃ |
Oh! |
97 |
C : |
Aaneǃ |
Yes. |
98 |
T : |
Nti woanya baabi aa wobè tena? |
Have you got a place to stay? |
99 |
C : |
Aane. Seisei deè manya baabi. Na mebae no deè me ne me yōnko bi na ekō tenaae. |
Yes. I've now got a place. At first, I was staying with a friend. |
100 |
T : |
Saa woahunu? |
Oh, really? |
101 |
C : |
Aane. Nti yekō tena hō aa na akyire no…, deè ōbèhyia me wō "airport" no na wōde me kōō ne fie. Aane. Nti me tenaa ōhō kakra ansa na merekō akō nya baabi aa meara nso mètena. Ènora koraa na merekō ōhō. |
Yes. (T: Oh!) I stayed there for a while,… the guy who met me at the airport and sent me to his house (T: Oh!) Yes, I stayed there for a while before moving to my new place. (T: Oh!) I moved in there yesterday. |
102 |
T : |
Sè aha sei no ènte sè efie, ohǃ Efie deè…sukuu no nyinaa wō baabi aa yèda, sè woahunu. Nti wokō noara aa yède wo safoa maa wo noara na wo dan nso ni. Na wo akō akō tena mu. Aha sei nso deè gye sè woara na wo san kō kyini ekō hwehwè wo dan. |
Things are a lot different here from home. At home, most schools (Universities) are residential. Once you get your key you get your room; then you move in. Over here you've got to search for your own accommodation. |
103 |
C : |
Menyaa "letter" sèe yagye me aha no, ohǃ me deè me nim sèè ète sèe efie asem. Nti me nim sèè… |
When I got my letter of admission (T: Yes?), Oh, I thought it was like it is back home. |
104 |
T : |
Woatumu ada. |
|
105 |
C : |
Ohǃ Matumu ada koraa, aa adeè yi merepepere me ho ayè dèn? Nti me nim sèè deè mèda ène bibiara deè, yenya agye me no deè na èkyerè sèè deè mèda nso deè wōmo ayō no kama ama me. Ohǃ afei deè menkō yèse baabi…. "Graduate Students", aa èyè wōmo aa wōmo akō University pēn awie no aa wōmo retoa so no, baabi aa wōmo no da,...yèfrè no "Hall", nti menkō hō na menkō hwè sèè èkwan wō hō anaa; sè ebia yagya me baabi aa mèda wō ōhō aa. Mekōō yè aa yèse Ohǃ wo dini eni nkrataa mu. Eihǃ Asèm bèn ni? Me dini ni nkrataa mu? Aaahǃ Yèn dowhaa yenya gye wo deè aa na nkrataa nyinaa... |
So, I took it easy, why should I rush things, I told myself. I thought once I had been admitted my accommodation needs were also going to be taken care of. (T: Ahaǃ) So when I got here before I started thinking of where I was going to sleep. I therefore went to the Graduate Students Residence Hall to check up if I had a place there; that is whether I had been reserved a place/room. When I got there I was told that my name was not on the listǃ Whatǃ What is this? My name not on the list? Well, back home, once you've been admitted, all other documentation is O.K. |
106 |
T : |
Nkrataa nyinaa wo dini wō mu. |
Your name appears on all (relevant) documents. |
107 |
C : |
Ohǃ Èyè "automatic." Aane, aborōfo ara na kae sèè "automatic" na èkyerè sè wo dini wō nkrataa aa èfa ho biara. Aane, nti aanyè yie wō hō. Nti na èkyerè sè èwō sèè mekō hwehwè baabi. Na emom aha dan no pè no nnyè dene. (Tː Ahaǃ) Aha dan pè no ènyè dene sè wo wō sika aa wo de betua nkoaa deè aa,... ènyè dene sè wobè nya baabi. Wonam koraa yatwerètwerè abobōbobō adan ho wō akwan nkyèn sè akwan da ha no wo aa wo pè no bra behwè sè w'ani gye ho anaa. |
Oh, it is automatic, as the white man will say. That means your name appears on all relevant documents. So I did not succeed there. That meant that I had to search for alternative accommodation. I must say that it is not all that difficult finding housing here. (Tː Yeahǃ) It is not difficult once you have the money to pay. You can see notices of vacancies and open house invitations as you walk along the streets. |
108 |
T : |
Na w'ani gye baabi aa wote no deè? |
Do you like your new place? |
109 |
C : |
Ohǃ Ōhō yèǃ Mekōō emu fofrō no na yèdaa mu akyè nti no na ōhō no,… ōhō ayè sè deè nframa no gyina mu. Sè woahunu? Nti na mentumi hunu sè deè ōhō si yè fa. Afei me daa mu bèyè sè nansa no, mahunu sè oh, ōhō yè; ama sè mebuebue ntokua no aa... nframa so afefa fefa mu aa kama. |
Well, it's nice. When I first moved in, it was kind of stuffy inside because it had not been slept in for a while. You see? So I couldn't determine how good it was. But after sleeping in it for three days I've seen that it is alright; once I open the windows the wind blows through it freely. |
110 |
T : |
Na, aduane no nso te sèn? |
And how is the food? |
111 |
C : |
Aduane deè, wōmo ama me afidie bi aa metumi noa so aduane. Na me nnya ntotōō nkyènsee ne noōmanoōma. Èneè woara wo hwè aa, nkwantere nom nyinaa. Èwō sē onipa bō nkwan. |
Talking about food, I have a hot-plate. But I have not bought cooking utensils yet. As you know, soup laddles and stuff. I will have to be preparing myself some good soups. |
112 |
T : |
Aaneǃ |
|
113 |
C : |
Aaneǃ Na eno no, èkyerè sèè ehia mmerè, woara wonim sè aduane noa deè wo gyina,… wogyina aborōfo koropōt,… aborōfo koropōt,… wogyina ho saa ēbeyē sē dōn hwere anaa sē nōn hwere mienu. |
Yeahǃ but that takes time. You know very well that one has to spend about an hour or two by the hot-plate (cooker). |
114 |
T : |
Aha sei nso deè bokōō. Sè wonim sèè medeè bèyè sè afe ni ara na me nso mebè duruu yè. Na agya mereba, mefiri efie tōōn na mebèsii. |
Everything is just cool here. You know that I came over here about a year ago. I flew over straight from home. |
115 |
C : |
Sè woreba koraa mehunuu wo. |
I met you just before your departure. |
116 |
T : |
Ahaaǃ Mekae, mekae, mekae. Na mebè duruu yè, aa, mabu m'atadeè,… mahyè "coat" ne "trouser" yi ne "tie" yi pee,… |
Yes, I rememberǃ I was fully dressed in a suit, when I arrived. |
117 |
C : |
Kuntanǃ |
Real heavyǃ |
118 |
T : |
Mebè duruu yè na afei deè, aa aha na awia yi, eihǃ Nti mesii yè noara na afei deè na… èwō sèè m'atadeè,… "coat" no me worō de sèn baabi. |
But when I arrived it was so warm that I had to get off my coat and I hanged it somewhere. |
119 |
C : |
Wo worōō "coat" no? |
You got off your coat? |
120 |
T : |
Me worō de sène me nsa so sesaa we noōma, m'adanfo so aa me ne no kasaa yè no nso, ōde ōseè yèè ōyō, aba abèhyia me. |
I got it off and hanged it on my arm; then claimed my baggage and met my friend who came to meet me just as he had promised. |
121 |
C : |
Ohǃ Fineǃ |
Oh, fineǃ |
122 |
T : |

So he brought me down soon after I had packed the luggage into the car. That very evening, he drove me through town. We went to some very popular entertaining spots. Places where things were happening. So I slept at around 2pm. Following morning, I got into the Orientation Program; and mixed up freely with the white folk; people from South-east Asia, Europe and other foreign countries. After about two weeks I got a place to stay. (Cː Ohǃ) By the grace of God, I got a place to stay... |

That's rightǃ The place where you were not listed. That was the very place I got. So I went to stay there. I stayed there for nine months (Cː Ahaǃ) I moved into a friend's house during the vacation; he was going home to get his documents in order. I went to live there. That is where I have been living up till now. But the nature of food here is...well...at home..., the method of preparation is a little bit different at home. Yes, it is a little bit different at home so that you'll feel a little bit uncomfortable with it (the food). |

The food I was familiar with was Rice and Chicken, so I could call for that. Because that what I was familiar with, I always called for that and was given. The other food items were some combinations of onions and tomatoes with some dark liquid poured over. You see? So I could not tell what the food was like; what is this? Well, so yesterday I decided to go forward and ask what kind of food they (those strange combinations) were. So I asked what food it was and they told me that it was onion pieces,... I mean they told me of the spices. And the I said I wasn't allergic to any of them and in that case I should be served with it; and I tasted it, ...well... I think it is O.K. |

Well, over here once you have arrived and by the grace of God you have got a place to stay and you are alright with school arrangements, it's only left with a matter of socializing… and addressing yourself seriously to the work, the way you want it anyway. You won't run into trouble if you don't ask for it, thus you'll be able to go ahead with whatever you are doing. |
